چکیده

) i t ] is twice the variance of the single interspike intervals [ var( 1 i t   ]. If bursting occurs, successive intervals are no longer independent, and this relation is violated. Thus, the difference between the two variances is a measure for bursting. If we divide this difference by the squared average interspike interval, a normalized burst measure (B) is obtained that is sensitive only to the relative sizes of the interspike intervals and not to the average interval size:

Identification of bursts in spike trains.

A computer algorithm to identify 'bursts' in trains of spikes is described. The algorithm works by constructing a histogram of interspike intervals, then analyzing the histogram to detect the critical interval value in the distribution that represents the break between short intervals within a burst and the longer intervals between bursts. When such a value is found, it is used as the 'threshol...

The temporal structure of spike trains in the primate basal ganglia: afferent regulation of bursting demonstrated with precentral cerebral cortical ablation.

We studied the temporal pattern of discharge of single units in the basal ganglia of awake primates sitting quietly. Bursting was studied with a procedure that identified individual bursts in a spike train, quantifying burst intensity (surprise), bursts per 1000 spikes, spikes per burst and burst length. Autocorrelation techniques were used to assess the dependencies of spike trains on the temp...

Parallel processing of sensory input by bursts and isolated spikes.

Burst firing is commonly observed in many sensory systems and is proposed to transmit information reliably. Although a number of biophysical burst mechanisms have been identified, the relationship between burst dynamics and information transfer is uncertain. Electrosensory pyramidal cells have a well defined backpropagation-dependent burst mechanism. We used in vivo, in vitro, and modeling appr...

Dendritic modulation of burst-like firing in sensory neurons.

This report describes the variability of spontaneous firing characteristics of sensory neurons, electrosensory lateral line lobe (ELL) pyramidal cells, within the electrosensory lateral line lobe of weakly electric fish in vivo. We show that these cells' spontaneous firing frequency, measures of spike train regularity (interspike interval coefficient of variation), and the tendency of these cel...

At the single-neuron level, precisely timed spikes can either constitute firing-rate codes or spike.pattern codes that utilize the relative timing between consecutive spikes. There has been little experimental support for the hypothesis that such temporal patterns contribute substantially to information transmission. By using grasshopper auditory receptors as a model system, we show that correl...
